Grand Prix of Sicily August 28th 2011

2011 FIM SuperMoto World Championship and UEM European Championship.

On the August 28th weekend Superiders will compete to grab the title of the Grand Prix of Sicily, and this will be a second chance for those who already attended the race last season. In fact the International circuit of Triscina-Castelvetrano will be the scenery of the World and European Championships for the second consecutive year after the 2010 success and spectators will stare at riders put to hard test by the technical Sicilian track.

The Championship standings saw many exhilarating switches in positions between the two fellows who led them so far: TM Factory Racing Thomas Chareyre and Husqvarna Factory Mauno Hermunen. The triumph reached at Busca on April 3rd allowed the defending World Champion, Thomas Chareyre, to be the very first leader of the 2011 campaign but despite his great shape and potential he had to take one step back and watch his main rival, Finnish Hermunen, moving at the head of the standings after he secured the second consecutive victory of the Bulgarian GP in Pleven on May 29th. The mid-season appointment arrived on July 3rd and with it another big twist: none of the two won the GP of Andorra but Thomas Chareyre did better than Hermunen and this was enough for him to gain back the top spot.

At the moment the top three is rounded off by Fast Wheels ASD Adrien Chareyre, who worked his way up in the standings and the victory taken in Pas de la Casa was crucial for him to move in third position. HM Honda Racing Ivan Lazzarini dropped to the fourth place chased by PMR H2O Thierry Van Den Bosch and KTM 747 Motorsport promising French Alexis Marie Luce. Seventh, eighth and ninth positions are detained respectively by an Italian trio: Suzuki Valenti Lux Performance Christian Ravaglia, SBD Union Bike Giovanni Bussei and TDS Faor Massimo Beltrami. The top ten is rounded off by Sylvain Bidart and the Luc 1 Honda Team.

In the Open class, the Freccia Team racer Teo Monticelli feels good being the leader of the European Series and despite many rivals are looking forward the top spot, the young rider is managing well his 28-point advantage over KTM 747 Motorsport Alessandro Tognaccini, second in the point standings, and over team mate Massimiliano Porfiri, who is in third.

The location of the World and European Championships fourth appointment will be the 1.630 meter long and renewed International circuit of Triscina, which lies in the south-western coast of Sicily and this makes it the most southerly Italian circuit.

Last season the protagonists of the event hosted in the beautiful Mediterranean location were Triscina-race winner KTM 747 Motorsport Davide Gozzini, Thierry Van Den Bosch of the PMR H2O Team and Rigo Racing Andrea Occhini. With Gozzini forced to sit out the event due to the recent surgery at his right wrist, and with French VDB missing the event as he got injured while he was training, it will be really intriguing seeing who will clinch the Sicilian title this year.

Before watching Superiders sliding on the tarmac of the Triscina circuit, the major and some of the main politicians of Triscina and Castelvetrano will welcome the protagonists of the 2011 campaign on Thursday August 25th at 9:00pm in the ancient square of Triscina. The appointment will also have a special taste and sound as those present could taste the typical products of the Sicilian gastronomic tradition enjoying live and folkloristic music.

Surprises are not over yet, during the racing weekend spectators will also enjoy the action offered by the GoldenTyre Trophy, that will be disputed at the same time of the GP of Sicily with the qualifying on Saturday and two heats on Sunday; winners will get a considerable price money.
